Working On-Campus

All degree-seeking international students in the U.S. on F-1 and J-1 visas are allowed to work on-campus without any authorization from USCIS. However, you need documentation from your hiring department. The hourly limit for employment through scholarships and assistantships is 20 or less hours per week when classes are in session. When classes are not in session, the limit is 20 or more hours per week.

Students seeking on-campus employment should visit the Office of Career Services' website and log into the Handshake portal to see available jobs.

Graduate students should contact the Graduate School at gradschool@louisiana.edu or visit https://www.evanwatkinsshow.com/graduateschool for additional information.

Working Off-Campus

International students are allowed to work off-campus under three categories, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training, OPT, or Economic Hardship. CPT requires authorization from the Office of International Affairs, while OPT (work authorization after graduation or completion of coursework), and Economic Hardship both require authorization from USCIS. Please contact opt-cpt@louisiana.edu, call 337-482-6819, or schedule a virtual advising appointment (Select 'Work Authorization') for questions about OPT or CPT.
